Websites

Silicon Goblin Technologies specializes in all aspects of website design: planning, coding, quality-assurance testing and delivery. We do well-designed, fast, efficient, standards-compliant sites that get your message out to the widest possible audience.

We do backend development as well, specializing in the Linux world of Apache server configurations, Perl, mod_perl and PHP for lean, mean server-side processes, and MySQL for server-side databases - all free and open-source. We use our own open-source content-management tools that streamline the process of developement, ensuring rapid builds, absolute quality control, and maximum flexibility. We also run our own servers and can provide hosting for web projects (see below); this provides a complete deployment solution and allows us to reach deeper into our bag of tricks for you and your site.

We are strong supporters of the principles espoused by the World Wide Web Consortium and the Web Standards Organization; clean, well-coded websites are easier to maintain, cheaper to develop, and make the web more useful than flashy but badly-structured, technically deficient sites that only work on a handful of browsers.

Web/domain hosting

Silicon Goblin Technologies offers affordable web and domain hosting. We run a Linux server on a redundant T3 backbone with a strong focus on security. The following services are currently available:

Domain and email hosting
WebDAV support for secure drag-and-drop uploading
MySQL database access
Apache webserver with mod_perl, PHP and SSL
Automatic link checking and usage reporting
Typo3, Scoop, WordPress, and other popular front-ends for hosted domains

Programming

Silicon Goblin Technologies is available for general-purpose programming in a variety of languages. Currently specializing in Perl and PHP, other languages used in the past include C, 6502 Assembler, Pascal, Visual (and various flavors of) BASIC (e.g. for MS-Access and Word), various macro and scripting languages, and others too obscure to mention (Forth, Logo, etc). Other languages can generally be acquired with two to three days ramp-up time.

We must confess that Perl holds a special place in our hearts. The need for languages like C and Assembler for general-purpose programming is diminishing with the ongoing advent of cheap, fast machines, and we've been writing Perl almost exclusively for about eight years. Training

Silicon Goblin Technologies offers technical trainings on a wide range of topics, from beginning to advanced. We have presented dozens of trainings over the last few years, on scales ranging from individuals and very small groups to conference presentations to 75 or more.

Favorite topics include general computer and internet literacy, website development and information management, and specific "how-to" sessions on a wide range of application and internet software. General technical troubleshooting and the culture of technology are other areas of interest.

Although we speak "Geek" and can train techies, we also speak English and greatly enjoy working with non-technical people, for whom technology is a tool, not a way of life. We enjoy training people from all levels, from first-time computer users to experienced programmers, and we keep our trainings flexible, lively, and centered around the clients' needs and objectives.

Technical Writing

Silicon Goblin Technologies is also available for technical writing; we have written technical manuals and documentation for large software products and projects. A wide range of document formats is available; well-structured and well-indexed documents are our specialty, and we write in a clear voice that presents task-oriented explanations, backgrounds, and solutions.
